Intern Position at Massachusetts Water Resources Authority in Southborough, Massachusetts


Job Description for Intern-Biology, Quality Assurance/Field Operations


The Quality Assurance group at Southborough has an opening for an intern.


Job duties include:

  • Collection and analysis of samples for collections including but not limited to:
    1. Daily sampling at various MWRA treatment, transmission and distribution facilities
    2. Daily laboratory testing of alkalinity, monochloramine and free ammonia
    3. Weekly storage tank sampling
    4. Quarterly special collections at various distribution system locations
    5. Fluoride testing,
    6. Bimonthly cyanotoxin sampling,
    7. Source water algae speciation, and
    8. Special projects including but not limited to pipeline sampling and testing, chlorine decay studies, community sampling for water quality complaints, and sampling for EPA's UCMR4 program
  • Assistance with algae collection and monitoring in a reservoir environment
  • Assistance with depth samplers and water quality sondes.
  • Additional duties may include sample collection, laboratory analysis, solution preparation (e.g. buffers/quality control standards).


The preferred candidate will be at least a junior in a college degree program in biology, limnology, microbiology, or chemistry. The candidate should have some laboratory skills and coursework in limnology helpful.



  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to swim, work outside in all weather conditions, lift moderately heavy objects.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office Suite software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Access.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in collection of water samples from sample taps at treatment and distribution facilities, and          source water reservoirs.
  • Assist in the monitoring of algae levels (speciation using the FlowCam).
  • Assist in the collection of water samples from various locations and facilities within MWRA's    transmission and distribution system.
  • Adhere to standard laboratory practices, safety requirements, SOPs, and chain of custody       documentation.
  • Perform field water quality testing (temperature, pH, odor, total and free chlorine, monochloramine,    free ammonia, specific conductance).
  • Assist with the UCMR4, Stage II Disinfection Byproducts Rule and Optimal Water Quality       Parameters sampling programs
  • Perform related duties as required.

  • Work Location: MWRA, Western Operations, 268 Boston Road, Southborough, MA
  • Compensation: To be determined and based on education level and experience
  • Work Schedule: Full-Time or Part-time, Monday - Friday 7:30AM to 3:30PM; a minimum of 15       hours is required per week; two 8-hour workdays are preferred.
  • Internship Period: January - June
